Review of how to use a camera and tripod/Basic tools in Photoshop
Since the weather is nice, we will use the time to shoot  until 1:30 then use the rest of the time to time to upload and edit.

Portrait Assignment: You are to shoot a variety of shots including head shots, shots with props, experimental, full body, change of clothing ( shot on different days), different environments. Try to really capture the essence of your model. 15 shots

 1. Your order of priority today should be:

  • composition shots (5), headshots (5), abstract shots (5), but you need 20 in total. They should be edited and in albums on Flickr
  • Make sure you are on Flickr with me as a contact so I can mark your work! Change background photo and buddy icon, and have all photos in albums.
  • Hand in overlay 
  • Ask the teacher or another student for feedback on your photos.
2. Priority #2 : Research or watch some you tube videos on how to style/shoot product photos. A lot of people shoot in their own home using a lamp or window for lighting. Backgrounds are table tops or white paper. WATCH VIDEO as a class.




3. Time to go out and shoot. you can work on portraits or product photography. Be productive. Use the outdoors if the weather is good.
4. Return to upload, edit and post to Flickr.
5. If time as a class, watch the video on Model tips, posing for portraits. For portrait shots choose a variety of backgrounds, props, shoot on different days with different clothing and use different lighting or locations.

Basic Expectations

  • all cameras and cards are signed out and signed back in
  • students are out taking photos when given time to do so
  • all work is handed in on time and in the proper format
  • students do not leave early from class, and are dismissed by the teacher
  • if you need to leave early for some reason you speak to the teacher
  • photos are not taken of art but are art
  • you should go out with your own camera and shoot your own photos
  • photos should be original and not recycled from past work
1. All students should open up Flickr and show that you have me as a contact, your assignments are albums, you have a headshot of yourself as an avatar, and your background photo has been changed

2. Photoshop lesson and time to practice. NEW ASSIGNMENT DUE TODAY: OVERLAY print out and hand in 10 marks

3. Introduction to Product Photography.

Product photography is a branch of commercial photography which is about accurately but attractively representing a product. The principal application of product photography is in product catalogues and brochures, with a proportion of product images also being used in advertising.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT
Ad Shoot and Final Ads: You are to decide on a product to shoot, and try shooting it many different ways. You are expected to do 10 shots minimum. Once you have done this, in consultation with the teacher or others in the class, you are going to determine which 2 photos will work best for an ad and then create the ad from these 2 photos. You will then edit for lighting, put on text ( an ad slogan) or a logo. Marks 20

Friday Nov.20 Abstract Photography

ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY


Abstract photography is non-representational. You play with the concept of LINE SHAPE and COLOUR., TEXTURE, PATTERN, MOTION BLUR  You are creating photographic art. 

Assignment #3: 20 shots full on experimental. Make sure the photos are non-representational, unique, you have tried a variety of methods. Your shots should focus on one of the elements of design: LINE, SHAPE,COLOUR,TEXTURE,PATTERN and MOTION BLUR. 

Try to create a piece of art from your photographs.

 1. Review of Flickr: buddy icon, background photo, name so i know it is you, contacts, albums

 2. Creation of folder on l drive, uploading of photos, intro to Photoshop ( crop/lighting)

 3. Photo class guidelines: no photos of art, no sharing of photos, photos of self can use a remote or set the shot up, all shots must be in focus unless creating an effect, focus on the assignments given first, do not delete in camera, appropriate use of the camera and equipment, appropriate photo taking and boundaries, leave the room as it was, lights off, do not use teachers desk and chair

Term 2 2020: Welcome to Photo 11/12








Photography is not about the camera but how you use the camera. You can have an expensive camera and still take bad pictures. The focus of this course is not on the many technical aspects of how to use a camera but rather on how to compose great shots and extending your knowledge into creating with using photography as a medium. 

We will be learning how to use and expand the use of Photoshop and other editing programs to create advertising, a magazine cover, videos, and photographic art.

The visual world is becoming part of our everyday life. Most people on the internet are focused on photos and video to get across ideas. Logos and photos are an instant way for people to get an idea across. It is important for young people to be able to navigate the ever increasing world of visual literacy.

Requirements of this course:
  • a decent digital slr or camera phone for taking photos, school cameras cannot be taken home so you must borrow a camera from a friend or family member if you do not have a decent phone camera
  • a usb drive and/or an extra phone cord for use at school for transferring photos 
  • a card reader/phone cable at school for transferring photos to the school computer
  • a 16 gb card that can be used for taking photos with the school camera
  • the ability to use some of your time to take photos outside of school 
  • a desire to learn and grow through digital media
  • ability to work with others and be a good model
  • time management skills
Assessment:

 This course is assessed based on student's ability to push boundaries, meet assignment deadlines and progress in their ability to become better photographers/videographers and visual artists. Students are expected to push themselves at the level they are at to improve and produce quality work. A high standard is expected, and poor quality work will not be accepted. You will be asked to Re-do an assignment if it does not meet expectations. 

Photography as a career:

As photographers and videographers we are learning to embrace the technology for multiple uses in our world. I personally know of students who have graduated from my classes who are now sound technicians, models and actors, videographers, wedding photographers and some who work in niche photography areas as a part time business for themselves.
Think there are no jobs in Photography/Graphic Design and Film... Think again!  

Students new to Photography:
  1. Install the teams app and the Flickr App on your phone
  2. Sign up to Flickr on the computers, make Ms Chase a contact
  3. Put a photo of you in the buddy icon
  4. Change the background photo to one of your own
  5. Create an album for your first assignment and call it composition
ASSIGNMENT#1: In partners, your first assignment is to research and find a  Photography/Videography or Photo Editor job utilizing the skills we will be learning in this class and present it to the class. List the top 5 skills needed for this job.
10 marks handed in and presented to the class Tues.

The Resort Photographer / Videographer, part of Castle Mountain Resort’s sales and marketing team, works closely with several teammates, and reports directly to the Sales & Marketing Manager. This role is primarily responsible for the ascertaining and editing of photo and video-based content, including the development of weekly resort update video, which will be used by the resort through it’s various traditional and digital marketing avenues.

Requirements:
  • Completion of high school or equivalent with a preference given to candidates who have completed a post-secondary marketing or communications
  • Must supply and use own camera equipment (DSLR), and related accessories
  • Technical Skills: Using digital cameras and industry standard software such as Photoshop & Lightroom
  • Artistic Ability: be able to compose a shot, understand framing, color and light to create a visually pleasing photograph
  • The ability to work under pressure, effectively manage workload, and meet deadlines
  • The ability to work both independently and in teams, building rapport with guests, clients, colleagues, and resort partners
  • Strong intermediate or better skier or snowboarder
  • Fluency in English; other languages considered an asset

Work Conditions:
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer 
  • Outdoor work in extreme winter conditions
  • Flexible working hours required (some weekends required during fall, all weekends within winter)
