Update week of Nov.1, 2011

Students have just handed in their storyboards and should be working diligently on their song photoshoot. The due date for this assignment is Mon. Nov. 21, we will be presenting in class. While this assignment is being worked on, students can be working on their advertisement assignment and their portrait photoshoot. While you have your models for your song shoot, you may want to work on your portraits.

Advertisement: Have a look through magazines and online ads to get an idea of the style of ad you want to shoot. Decide on a shot, then upload into Photoshop and ad words to your ad.

Portrait Photoshoot: You are to use one or two models only. The focus of this assignment is to work with your models and tell them what you want. You need to get the best out of them and push boundaries using the same model.
Shots: 10 in total marks 20

Things to think about:
  • location of shoot
  • background
  • use of props (hats, scarves, sports equipment)
  • poses/position of models
  • lighting, even if you are outside, what time of day are you shooting? what are your light conditions?
  • capture the spirit/essence of the person you are shooting

Things to Remember before we shoot

Skatepark Photo Assignment: This is a fairly wide open assignment which can involve shooting the park itself, people in and around the park, boarders, up close shots at the park. We will spend two days out shooting (Thurs/Fri during class: feel free to come to the park on the weekend to get more shots if you like)

Assignment #1
Number of Shots: 15
All should involve basic editing ( DO NOT USE ANY HEAVY FILTERS FOR THESE PHOTOS)
5 shots are to be edited into black and white
All 15 shots should be posted to Flickr and should be in a set entitled: skatepark

Criteria for marking will be based on the basic elements of composition. Unless you are trying to create a blurred photo, all photos should be clearly in focus. Marks 30

Things are looking good

I am very impressed with the group of students in this class so far, everyone is picking things up quickly. We have been moving a little slower than usual to make sure that everyone is up to speed on the basics. Today in class, we viewed a short slideshow on top photos from last year, and one slideshow on the assignment where you create a slideshow to a song. Have a look at the following list to see if you are up to date.

  • Flicker account set up with F2011 in brackets beside your screen name
  • you have made me a contact on Flickr (go to contacts chase)
  • Buddy icon created on Flickr
  • first photo of yourself uploaded onto Flickr ( make sure all assignment photos are public so I can mark them, this means they have a green square beside them)
  • Do not upload photos to Flickr bigger than 3mb
  • a folder on your L Drive created that says Photo 11/12
  • you have purchased your own 2gb sd card
  • you know how to crop, resize and turn a photo to black and white in Photoshop
  • review the links on this site that focus on composition/camera modes etc.( we will be having a test the end of next week)
Skate Park photoshoot is Thursday during class. Make sure you have your cameras in class, your batteries charged up and your compositional toolkit ready.
