Ms Chase is away today

Students you should have your macro assignment in presentation format for tomorrow. There are no excuses! Your macro assignment presentation will not be graded if you do not present it on Friday.
( Note: I have added an extra day for you to work on it) It should be saved on the Hard drive with the blue duct tape on it under the folder 2016 Macros. ( There have already been two people who have completed this) It should be on this drive prior to class starting for full marks. Please make sure the drive makes its way back up to my desk at the end of class.

If for some reason, it is not fully finished, my advice is to do the slideshow with what photos you have, so you can get part marks for the presentation. A reminder this assignment should also be posted to Flickr in an album for detailed marking as well. The due date for this part of the assignment is Friday Nov. 8.

MACRO assignment presentation: Please have your name on the first slide and rename your movie file to include your name. Make sure you have a song. You should have 10 colour and 10 black and white photos. Timing should be around 4 seconds. If you are having trouble getting a song onto your Photostory please ask someone in the class for help, most people know how to do this. Music files need to be in mp3 format if they are going into a Photostory program. Do not use VEVO when you are finding your song to convert on You Tube. Older songs work best since musical artists today can block you from using their songs on You Tube.

Using imovie at home: If you produce an iMovie at home you need to create the movie then move it to your desktop. Then you should move it to a small jump drive. Then move it from the jump drive to your L:drive and then to my hard drive with the blue tape on it. The movie will be played in Quicktime.

A REMINDER THAT THE TERM ENDS ON TUES NOV 10 THIS IS A WEEK AND A HALF AWAY. I will begin marking this weekend so please make sure I can access your photos. And make sure all assignments are organized into sets. VIDEOS ARE NOT DUE FOR TERM #1.

For a detailed listing of all assignments and criteria see posting on Oct. 2.

Isfeld Advanced Photography: NEW ASSIGNMENT MACROS: ( Click on the underlined title to take you to another portion of this site which has details of this assignment and a number of links to help you out.) You will be expected to take 20 macro shots, 10 black and white and 10 colour.

Friday Oct. 2 Current Assignment Update

Check out some new technology gadgets at the following link:
NEW TECHNO GADGETS

The following is an update of all assignments to date with criteria. I will also post up a few of the upcoming assignments.

Assignment #1: Poses : 5 girl poses and 5guy poses, also include 2 poses done right and 2 examples of how you could do it better. ( Essentially a before and after shot) When you post these to Flickr, comment in the description what you did in the second shot to make it better. All of these can be saved under an album, POSES.

Criteria for this assignment: Photos should be in focus, using elements of composition, non-distracting backgrounds, a flattering shot of the individual and a few of the shots should be full body…not all head shots. (marks 20) DUE - marking this weekend.

Assignment #2: PART A: Product shots:10 shots. You are to choose a product to shoot and you are to take 10 different shots of your product. Try to mix it up a little…take shots of people using your product, take inside shots on clean backgrounds, take you product outside to shoot…lots of experimentation. Upload all 10 shots to Flickr under album, PRODUCT SHOOT.
Magazine ad PART B: After you have completed the 10 shots , you are to choose the best 1 or 2 shots and create a magazine ad which will be saved on MS Chase's jump drive and saved to Flickr under the product shoot album.

Criteria for this assignment: PART A: Photos should show experimentation, varied background and evidence of trying to showcase the product at its best. Not all shots have to be perfect, since I am marking your process in this assignment.  ( marks 10) PART B: Product should be the focus of the ad, shot is clear, lighting effects work, logo or slogan is included in the ad, and most importantly looks professional…like an ad I would see in a magazine. ( marks 20)

Assignment #3: Backgrounds: In this assignment you are shooting to create interesting and varied background for post production work. We will be utilizing these backgrounds for overlays or layering work in Photoshop at a later date. Post onto Flickr in alblum entitled BACKGROUNDS (10 shots minimum)

Criteria for this assignment: Try to take a variety of shots, include some textures , shoot face on or straight on…avoid shooting on an angle and taking photos of pre-existing art…make your own art!Try not to have too much going on in the backgrounds, less is more. (marks 10)

Assignment #4: Macros: PART A: In this assignment, you will be shooting 20 macro ( or up close) shots. 10 will be in black and white and 10 will be in colour. I would like to see a variety of shots and not too many flower shots…please do not recycle any old photos from other years or past assignments. Make sure your black and white shots show lots of contrast. You may use Ms Chase's macro lens but a good lens does not necessarily make a great photo. Think about your subject matter, getting new and interesting shots, think about your lighting and experiment!
PART A 20 photos uploaded to Flickr in an album entitled MACROS, PART B You will take these 20 shots and put into a slideshow set to music which will be presented in class. Due date TBA

Criteria for this assignment: Photos should be composed well, be in focus, have a clean background. I am looking for wow photos…ones that are more than good, but rather, spectacular and breathtaking!
(PART A 20 shots=20 marks) (PART B Slideshow 40 marks presented in class)

Assignment #5: 5 fall shots…open to interpretation. Make sure you meet Elements of Composition criteria ( marks 10)

Work habits: In addition to assignment marks, a mark out of 10 will be assigned by the teacher based on : time on task, use of class time, striving to perform your best work, experimentation, and asking for feedback on your work.

Advice for Jean Marc: READ THIS!

Friday Sept 25

Today we had a look at The Flickr Blog and looked at a portrait photographer's collection of work. We discussed mood lighting and the importance of creating a style that is unique. We then watched a video on Jimmy the Dog, and how an individual can become famous over night with one creative idea and a little talent.

NEW ASSIGNMENT : You are to produce a collection of 10 background photos that can be used for overlays or changing out the backgrounds in your photos. Try to shoot a variety of different shots. May include textures, sky, fabric bokeh etc. Make sure you fill the frame. Also try to shoot head on for best results.(10 marks)

Shooting on white backgrounds

The following is a good article on how to shoot products on white backgrounds. This works best for smaller products and for exposure on the web. It is worth the read and helps with how to set up the camera for shooting and how to create inexpensive lighting.

Thurs. Sept 17

We have been working on the poses/portrait assignment over the past few days. Today we will continue with editing and possibly do a bit more shooting when the weather cooperates. We will watch a video on how to get the best photos and I will introduce the new product assignment.

Product assignment: choose a product and take 10 very different shots of your product. Remember, you are trying to sell the product. Then you will choose your best shot and create a magazine ad for it. Feel free to include people in your ad if necessary and try to think outside of the box. Would your ad stop someone leafing through a magazine to check out the product in closer detail?

Welcome back

Welcome back to school and to Photography 11/12. I am hoping you chose this course and are here because you want to challenge yourself, improve your photography, learn a little about video production and have some fun doing it! At this level, I am assuming that you have a solid background in the basics…if you landed in this class and you do not it is up to you to go through this site and the intro site to bring yourself up to speed. Also you should buddy up with someone who has already gone through Intro Photo so they can help you along.

Requirements: At this level it will be very helpful to have your own camera ( digital SLR), or a really good camera phone, a good working computer at home, your own sd card and jump ( thumb) drive. There will be cameras to borrow but they may not always be available since we only have about 10 cameras for over 100 students.

Let's begin with a quick review of camera basics.
