Light Photography

How to light paint article
  1. You need to have your lens and camera set into manual mode, use a tripod.
  2. Your iso should be set to low ( l00), F stop is good around F8 but this can be experimented with. You want to open your shutter for a longer period of time in order to allow more light to come in. ( try 15 sec to start)
  3. And you can experiment with the length of time you want to keep the shutter open. On some cameras changing the setting to bulb mode will help.

We challenged teenagers to analyze media and adult stereotypes about their generation — then take photos to counter them.“What can you show us from your own life, or the lives of those around you, that might help make the portrait of ‘Gen Z’ more interesting, complete or real?” we asked. Nearly 2,200 students answered. They showed us teenagers in cars, in classrooms, at parties, in swimming pools, on playing fields and in their beds; teenagers with their dogs, their moms, their friends, their homework, their makeup, their video games and their prom dates; teenagers running, jumping, studying, singing, vaping, taking selfies, protesting and kissing. But the thing they showed us most often — by our count, in over 70 percent of the images we received — was teenagers with their phones.      Check out this link:generation article

FACETIME CALL TOMORROW with Kate Henderson

Research and Brainstorming Boundaries

Capture is pleased to partner with Magenta Foundation, Canada’s pioneering charitable arts publishing house based in Toronto and the founder of the Flash Forward Incubator, to present the second edition of the Incubator in British Columbia.

Presenting a new model for arts education and support in Canada, the Flash Forward Incubator Program both proposes a new exciting model for arts education and prepares emerging artists for their transition out of high school.

Incubator gives students opportunity to engage with critical and contemporary art ideas and methodologies they may not be working with in their art classes. Developed in collaboration with industry professionals and educators, the program integrates independent and interactive instructional methods, both online and in-person, and offers diverse opportunities to give and receive feedback from other students, teachers, and Magenta and Capture’s education team.

In addition to an education experience, the Incubator offers students a signature piece for their portfolios; a publication, produced by Magenta; an exhibition/silent auction, held during Capture; participation in a citywide festival; and a feature in the Capture Magazine. All money raised at the auction goes back into the schools’ art programs!

FLASH FORWARD INCUBATOR PROGRAM - Theme Boundaries

The theme for this year’s Flash Forward Incubator Program is ‘Boundaries’. It asks participants to think deeply about the role and meaning they play in our world today. Boundaries, real or imagined, are lines or borders which demark the edge or limit of something, as well as the potential of an unknown beyond them. They are socio-political constructs and physical objects which help us frame our movement, actions and understanding, as well as our perceptions of behaviour, knowledge and justice; be they visual, physical, psychological, personal, geographic and economic. They can also be constraints, but within that constraint, lead to greater freedoms when the larger whole is taken into consideration.

How do we navigate these boundaries, what impact do they have on our choices and our freedoms? What are our personal boundaries? Are there limits to what we can say, do, think or believe? Do we have limits to where we can freely move in terms of geography, class, gender, or politics? Who creates and controls those boundaries? Are they fixed or flexible? How have they changed over time, and how do we navigate those changes? Do we impose our own boundaries on ourselves and others, or are they set by something else? Are more boundaries needed? What are the boundaries created when making art? Are they in the framing of the image, the colours and lines, material or content choices? Are they in the relationship between the public and the private, or between the subject and the artist? How have boundaries impacted the artists before us? Can we see the impact of those boundaries in their content, in their choices of materials, or in the physical manifestation of their work? How do boundaries influence our capacity and freedom to select?

This year’s Flash Forward Incubator Program is open to a wide range of photography-based projects which explore the ideas and actualities of ‘Boundaries’. We are looking for projects which examine the role that they have played in the history of art; censorship, mediocrity, and innovation.

When composing shots you should think about...

A Checklist for composition
  1. Is the horizon straight?
  2. Is the subject strong and obvious within the image?
  3. Are the edges of the frame clean? Is anything poking into the frame that distract the viewer? Are there elements of the image that lead the eye out of the frame that could be positioned better?
  4. Is the background clean – are there distracting elements like a car parked in the background, or a fence or a house that doesn’t fit? Can you move or change the angle to remove that element?
  5. Is the foreground tidy? Are you shooting a landscape or natural scene where there might be branches or leaves or twigs in the foreground that could be tidied away?
  6. The position of people in the shot. Do they have a lamp post or a tree growing out of the top of their head? Have you chopped heads, feet, arms, or legs off?
  7. Eye contact – when shooting a group of people, do we have eye contact with all your subjects?
  8. Camera position – are you at the right height/angle for the best composition?
  9. Point of focus – when taking photos of people/creatures/animals have you focused on the eye? Do you have a catchlight in the eye?
  10. Is the Rule of Thirds being used effectively?
  11. Do you have a sense of scale – particularly valid for large landscape scenes?
  12. How does the eye travel around the image? Where does it go first? Where does it end up? Is that the story you want to tell the viewer?
  13. Lens choice – does the lens you are using affect the composition in a positive or negative way? Would a different lens be worth considering?
  14. Less is more – what truly needs to be in the frame? What can you leave out?
  15. Is it sharp? Do you want it to be?

Selfie/Portrait Assignment

Selfie/Portrait Assignment: You are to take 3 practice shots trying out different looks and techniques ( maybe try: projection, reflection, lens cover, props, black and white, spot colour etc.)
Once you have created the shot think about what makes you unique, who are you, what is your style, likes/dislikes. Add these ideas of who you are into the self portrait manually or using Photoshop.
Criteria: In your album on Flickr include all 3 practice shots and your final shot. The final shot should involve either manual or Photoshop manipulation, should be well composed, and  define who you are in some way. You will also print out a colour copy to be showcased in the hallway. Include a brief description with your final shot describing what you were trying to communicate in the image.
Marks: 20 marks

An assignment to begin thinking about.

"Diversity"
This assignment will be due near the end of term to allow plenty of time for you to work on it.
In one single image show an example of diversity. To be understood in its widest sense, the image of diversity could concern people, culture or environment and could be of a local or global concern. All techniques and styles are welcomed, feel free to use Photoshop for editing. Photos must be crisp, well composed and thoughtful. You will also be evaluated on your ability to express your creativity and to discuss your photo with the class.

Photos: 2 practice photos, choose your best photo to post as the assignment final. As with all assignments, your photos should be well composed, clearly focused and meet the assignment criteria. Post your practice photos and final copy to Flickr.
Marks: 20

Course Outline 2018
The focus of this course is on improving and building on basic photographic skills and techniques. We will use photography as a medium for artistic impression. Students will independently create, design and present images that reflect their own individuality and style. Students will create and manipulate personally meaningful images in order to elicit audience response. Some other topics of study include: developing skills in Photoshop CS4, light photography, conceptual photography, commercial photography, how to use manual functions on the camera, creating photographic art and learning about well known photographers, careers in photography, and working toward creating a photographic style.
Strong computer skills, access to a camera, and prior photographic skills will be an asset. Students must have their own 16GB sd card and a jump drive for transferring photos from home to school. A personal card reader would also be helpful.
Preparing for Test #1 ( end of Sept)
You should make notes/study the information for a Review of Basics test . The test will involve some written and practical components, and will be out of 25-30  marks.
Also open up Photoshop and be prepared to know how to use the following tools/complete the following tasks .
  • change an image to black and white
  • resize and image
  • save image as a jpeg
  • use the crop  and lighting adjustment tool
