Tues. Dec. 3

The following assignments are due before the Xmas holidays.

  • Portraits: 20, 10 guy shots , 10 girl shots
  • Collage: 1 photo....9 shots
  • Yearbook shots : 10 shots
  • Downtown shoot: 20 shots
  • Gel transfer: tile, 1 shot
  • Gel transfer: canvas 3 layers required in Photoshop. If you are using words do not forget to reverse them.
Your video is due the first week back after the holiday (50 marks), as is your magazine cover (10 marks) and Light Photography 5 shots (10 marks).

Light Photography: After a number of people in class have been experimenting the following might be helpful to those playing with light photography.
  1. You need to have your lens and camera set into manual mode
  2. Your iso should be set to low ( l00), F stop is good around F8 but this can be experimented with. You want to open your shutter for a longer period of tim in order to allow more light to come in.
  3. And you can experiment with the length of time you want to keep the shutter open. On some cameras changing the setting to bulb mode will help.

I love this guy's tutorials on you tube he is very knowledgeable and easy to understand. He has a number of creative tutorials, you should check him out.

The Power of Photography

As I have been saying in class, images hold a lot of power...they speak louder than words in today's society.  I have included a powerful link to investigate this idea further. This collection was shot by a photographer who wanted to put a face on cancer and make it real. He chronicled his wife's experience with cancer through photographs.

The story of one women's life.

Field trip

We will be experiencing our downtown field trip on Thurs. Nov. 7. We will be leaving the school at the beginning of lunch and getting back at the end of the school day by 3:30. Students will be completing an assignment for this shoot which will be detailed at a later date. We will be taking the bus...if students want to drive themselves they will need to fill out a special permission form. I will be handing out permission forms at the beginning of next week.

Note: Even if you do not go on the field trip, you are responsible for completing this assignment.
We will take this trip rain or shine but not if it is storming.

Week of Oct. 21

Macro Slideshows: we will finish seeing the last few slideshows...if these are not done on Mon, students will receive a 0/10 for the slideshow part. I was very pleased with the macros but I would like to see students push themselves even more to try and get artistic shots of interesting objects. ( 30 marks: 20 for the macros on Flickr and 10 for the slideshow)

Thank you to our models and Kody for the photo work for the fashion show, here is a fun shot from the shoot.

New Assignments this week:

Conceptual shots ( 3 shots) In this assignment you are trying to use a photo to convey a concept or abstract idea. For example you might choose a concept like: sadness, hope, fairness, equality, death, love, joy, creativity, etc You will then shoot a photo that reflects this concept. (marks 14)

Here are a few of examples:
Isolation

Freedom

Death

Concept proposal for Video Slideshow: This should be a minimum half page typed outlining the concept and ideas you have generated for your video assignment.
Due at the end of this week Fri. Oct. 25 ( marks 10)

Tues Oct 15

 Ms. Chase is away today

For most of you, you should be making sure your macros are ready to go in slideshow format and are on the Memorex drive ( which is in my top right hand drawer) for tomorrow. A number of you can be working on the numbers assignment. Make sure your videos have been rendered which means they are in a wmv format not the working copy of wp3. Any of the advanced students who have taken my class before should know how to do this.

There is a group of you who should be doing a shoot for the fashion show....get done what you can, we can always do some shooting tomorrow...but our deadline is  less than a week away to have the poster done. There should be lots for people to do considering I will be asking for a rough copy of what you are doing for your video assignment by the end of the week. This means you need to know what you are doing and begin to plan it out.

  • Brett no wandering!
  • Camera keys...see Ms Richard in library, please sign out and return cameras
  • Sara your camera was due back this morning!
  • Kody, do your best to get what you can for the fashion show, Danielle is ready ...you may want to use the brick wall as a background or blur the backgrounds
To all : Get lots of work done...we may need to postpone our field trip to next Thurs....this week is a little overfull with lots of deadlines on upcoming events for me.

Song/Video/Theme Assignment

Assignment Outline Song/Theme Assignment: Option #1 (to be marked out of 50)
Due: TBD
Song Length: 2 minutes min.
Number of Photos: 60 shots minimum
This assignment is similar to creating a music video except you will use still photographs/ or video. You should choose your song first, then decide on the type of of photos you want to shoot. You will be expected to create rough notes and a story board of your shots needed. This rough copy/storyboard of shots will be handed in for 20 marks.
ALL PHOTOS SHOULD BE TAKEN BY YOU, if you need to be in a shot, you need to be the one to set it up.

Criteria for Marking

  • This assignment must be in a format in which you can present to the class. As a group we will be spending time critiquing this work.
  • You may use any movie program you like, but please make sure it can be presented to the class, ( I can help with changing/reformatting video files) speak to me first if you are unsure.
  • photos (60 min.) are in focus and you use effective composition, high quality photography
  • photos connect thematically with the music/theme of the song, various angles and techniques are used to communicate ideas
  • slideshow/video is put together thoughtfully and sequenced effectively, thought is given to: order, timing and transition of shots
  • evidence of creative thought processes: use of metaphor, story, light, thematic concept…
GO BEYOND THE LITERAL INTERPRETATION OF THE SONG

  • there should be evidence of time and effort spent on this project, show me the WOW factor
  • marks will be deducted for late work, part of the assignment expectation is to work within a time frame and be able to meet a deadline (we will discuss a reasonable timeline in class)
"Beauty in a Second": Option #2  Please see sample assignment links to get an idea as to how this assignment should look. Essentially, you are to go out and shoot 60 1 second video clips (you may need shots to be up to 6 seconds to capture the video fully to allow for editing) and then compile to the specified piece of music in a movie program. The music is the same for all slideshows. When watching the sample videos, music can be downloaded through iTunes mp3 convertor or bought from i-tunes.

Please note: when shooting video, you still want your shots to be up close, shot using various angles, and capturing a feeling or essence of the beautiful moments in life. Make sure you DO NOT shoot vertical only horizontal.

This is the End...Summer is here

The purpose of this post is two fold, first to let you know that Fri. June 21 is my absolute last day for you to get any work handed in. My marks are due the following week. Thursday Feb. 21 New Assignments

Weather Feeling shots. What is the mood feeling of this time of year: Reflect our typical Feb. weather in 3 shots.

Glacier shots: You are to take 2 good shots of the Glacier. These photos can be taken from anywhere.

Today in class we learned how to use the crop, clone stamp tool and the blur and smudge tools. We spent some time looking around the filter program. Taylor gave a short presentation on Portraits.

Skatepark shots: focus on angles and possibly bring a prop to the skatepark. Please make sure you vary your shots so that I receive a variety of different shots with the main focus being angle. Shots 10

NEW Conceptual shots: 3 photos of a conceptual word. In this assignment, you are working as a conceptual photographer taking a word and then transforming it into a photo. For example if the word is joy, then you would try to come up with a photo which represents this idea.

Go to getty images or Evolve images in Google and type in a conceptual word and get some ideas by viewing what kind of photos are connected to this word. (marks 15)
All three photos do not have to be of the same conceptual word. You need to write the name of the word under the photo and a brief description as to why  you chose it. Here are some samples word ideas: joy, love, surprise, death, end, beauty, peace, balance, creativity, fun, excitement, weathered, old, decay, freedom etc. You are not expected to complete all of these shots today....but you might start the research part of this assignment...trying to figure out what concept you want to go with to get the shot.
Uncertainty: The girl look a little uncertain as she gazes upwards.

Content: The dog looks like he is pleased/content with his day at the beach.

Busted: Just kidding, I couldn't resist!

Thurs. Feb 14/2013

Yesterday we reviewed a number of functions in Photoshop, students had a test drive on Pixlr and/or Pic Monkey when trying to do spot colours. At this point students should be able to edit for lighting and cropping. You should also be able to put photos into black and white and be aware of how to use the filter tools in Photoshop. I am away today, please be respectful to Ms. Beckett, use your class time productively, ask for help from the teacher or others in the class, and when you are out taking photos, you are on task! With great freedom comes great responsibility.

STUDENTS SHOULD MAKE SURE PHOTO CARDS ARE PURCHASED BY NEXT TUES, OTHERWISE YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE PHOTOS. A REMINDER THAT CARD 0 HAS ALREADY GONE MISSING.

Assignments

Still Life: 8 photos in total all compiled into one set on Flickr. Photos should consist of the following:

  • 2 Moon snail shell shots, photos edited into black and white
  • 2 Flower shots, edited for spot colour
  • 4 other still life shots (student choice)
NEW ASSIGNMENT Circles: 10 shots of objects that  are circles or have part of the shot has a circle in it ( you do want your circle to be the focal point.
Criteria: clean backgrounds, focal point is the circle, think creatively so photos reflect this, in focus, a variety of shots, keep in mind all of the compositional elements we have learned so far. You may do some editing, but do not overdo with filters, I want to be able to see you know how to shoot a good photo.

Reminder: We will have a number of short lessons on Friday.

Tues Feb 12 ..Update of Learnings/Assignments

The first few weeks is a bit intense for students new to Photography as they try to grasp every bit of new knowledge, all I can say is keep the questions coming because this is how you learn. Here is an update of what you should know how to do by the end of this week.

Assignments:
  • Head shots:  2 shots that you have taken of someone, these are both head and shoulder shots. The shots can be of two different people. These shots should be flattering shots of the individual. Try to capture an essence of the individual in the shots. You are to save the originals on your L Drive under Photography in a sub folder entitled head shots. Next you will use the photo editor Pixlr of which I will include a link after this post to edit each head shot ( use a frame and an effect...do not go crazy in your efforts) Then you should post all 4 shots...your 2 originals and your 2 edited shots in a set on Flickr. Make sure your originals are between 50kb and 2 mb. If you need to resize see info on how to do this further down. Marks for this assignment 10
Editing software: There are a number of free programs you can use for editing photos. The one I most prefer these days is Pixlr which has a basic programs for filter and quick fix junkies and an advanced program which is VERY similar to Photoshop which is the program we will be using in class, and is generally the industry standard. You should be familiar with how to use a number of different programs. If you are a Mac user there are a multitude of Photo Apps which I am still trying to weed my way through.

Creative/Trick Photography Assignment

NEW TODAY: This is an assignment that should be able to be done mostly in class, and will likely involve some Photoshop work. You are to find a photo that think is really cool like the one below of the banana with the kiwi inside, or like the ones I have below in the links. It may take some time on Flickr or You Tube to find what appeals to you. Your task is to duplicate the photo assignment on your own. This may require some research, trial and error or experimentation. You may even want to contact the photographer and ask how they produced the photo. Try checking out the Creative Group on Flickr for ideas.
